Aidsfonds is a Dutch non-governmental organisation working towards a world without AIDS. Aidsfonds works towards a world where there are no longer any deaths from AIDS and where people enjoy good sexual health; a world in which everyone can love freely and without fear. Aidsfonds does this by working together with the people who are hit hardest by HIV, STIs, discrimination and exclusion. Aidsfonds strengthens their voice and supports them with information, knowledge and funding.
Aidsfonds works towards: no more deaths from AIDS and no new HIV infections; sexual health and rights for all; and a cure available for everyone living with HIV. Aidsfonds works with activists, communities, healthcare providers, scientists, governmental and non-governmental funders, as well as individual donors, to ensure accessible HIV and STI care, and human rights for all.
To respond to the rapidly changing work where climate change, racism and gender inequality and digital transformation are bringing about permanent change, Aidsfonds focusses on inclusiveness, continuous adaptability and digitalisation. Southern and East Africa remain the most HIV affected regions in the world, with 20.6 million people living with HIV and 670,000 new HIV infections in 2020. Aidsfonds therefore concentrates on the following countries: South Africa, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania, Indonesia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Kenya. Aidsfonds also focusses on the two regions of the world
where the HIV epidemic continues to grow rapidly: Eastern Europe/Central Asia and Middle East/North Africa and is exploring what is needed in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
In the Aidsfonds’ Theory of Change to achieve the mission of a world where people no longer die from AIDS and where everyone enjoys their full sexual health and is free to love fearlessly, Aidsfonds identified the following dream goals: 1. No one dies of AIDS and no new HIV infections. 2. Sexual health and rights for all. 3. Cure available for all people living with HIV.
To achieve these goals Aidsfonds works collectively with communities in three roles. As an advocate, Aidsfonds raises its voice and joins others to move governments, scientists, and funders to improve the rights and health of communities and scale up innovative solutions. As an expert, Aidsfonds work is evidence-based and builds on the knowledge and experiences of communities, health professionals and the public to increase their knowledge and agency. As an involved fundraiser and funder, Aidsfonds supports inclusive HIV cure research and innovative community solutions.
Under the key populations work of Aidsfonds, the sex work programme of Aidsfonds has a long history of implementing projects, both nationally and on a global level. The programme is specialised in supporting sex worker-led health and rights programmes to end AIDS among sex workers. Aidsfonds works directly with sex worker-led organisations, police and NGOs working on human rights and health services. In this work, Aidsfonds provides funding for advocacy and empowerment activities and ensures the availability of sex worker-friendly services. Aidsfonds is working directly with sex workers under two programmes, Hands Off (2019-2025) and the Love Alliance (2021-2025).

Hands Off (2019-2025) works directly with sex worker-led groups, police and NGOs working on human rights and health services to reduce violence against sex workers. Based on sex workers’ own priorities and needs activities implemented under the programme include rights literacy training and capacity building of sex worker movements, strengthening emergency response systems and roll out of national, regional and global lobby for law and policy reform.
The Love Alliance, a five-year programme (2021-2025), is based on an unwavering commitment to protecting, promoting and fulfilling sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) globally, unifying people who use drugs, sex workers and LGBTIQ+ movements, and amplifying the diversity of voices in these communities.
